In September 2024, the Federal Government of Nigeria approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, effective from July 2024. This decision was in line with the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
On January 30, 2025, the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier-General Yushau Ahmed, announced that corps members would begin to receive the new allowance starting from February 2025, pending the passage of the 2025 budget.

However, as of February 2025, corps members reported receiving the previous allowance of ₦33,000, leading to widespread disappointment and frustration. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for an investigation into the NYSC’s failure to implement the new allowance, emphasizing that many federal and state workers have already begun receiving the updated minimum wage.
In response, the NYSC’s acting spokesperson, Mrs. Carol Lembu, stated that the delay in disbursing the ₦77,000 allowance is due to awaiting the necessary cash backing from the Federal Government.
The delay in implementing the increased allowance has raised concerns among corps members, especially given the rising cost of living. Many are urging the Federal Government and NYSC to expedite the process to alleviate the financial challenges faced by these young Nigerians.
As the situation develops, the relevant authorities must provide clear communication and timely updates to ensure transparency and maintain trust among corps members and the general public.
