Procedures for NYSC Registration in Camp

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp marks the beginning of the mandatory one-year national service for Nigerian graduates. One of the most critical aspects of this phase is the registration and physical verification process, which ensures that only eligible corps members are enlisted. This guide provides a comprehensive breakdown of the registration steps to help prospective corps members prepare adequately.

1. Pre-Camp Preparation

Before heading to the NYSC orientation camp, prospective corps members should ensure they have completed all necessary preparations. This includes:

  • Printing out the NYSC Call-up Letter from the NYSC portal.
  • Downloading and printing the Green Card (evidence of online registration).
  • Obtaining the Medical Fitness Certificate from a government-approved hospital.
  • Making multiple photocopies of required documents.
  • Packing essential items such as white shirts, shorts, sneakers, toiletries, and other personal items.

2. Arrival at the Orientation Camp

Before registration, corps members must report to their assigned NYSC orientation camp. PCMS needs to bring all required documents and personal essentials to facilitate a smooth registration experience. Upon arriving at the designated NYSC camp, corps members should be prepared for a structured registration process. Ensure you arrive early to avoid long queues and potential delays.

3. Security Screening

At the camp entrance, security personnel will conduct a thorough check at the camp entrance. This process is designed to ensure that all entrants are legitimate corps members and that no prohibited items, such as weapons, hard drugs, or sharp objects, are brought into the camp.

4. Bed space/Hostel

Proceed to the hostel and present the registration job sheet to the official in charge of the allocation of bed space to PCMs. You will be asked to pick up any of the mattresses that are available there and head to the hostel that will be given to you. You will drop your bags in your bed space and then head out to the hall to complete your registration.

5. Verification of Call-Up Letter

After security clearance, the next step involves presenting the NYSC call-up letter for verification at the designated registration point. Officials will assess the authenticity of the document before permitting corps members to proceed. Corps Members must proceed to the designated verification point to present their Call-up Letters for confirmation. Officials will check for authenticity before allowing further registration.

6. Physical Verification of Document

In camp, verification of documents is done in geopolitical zones. North-Central, North-East, South-South, and South-West Zones. If you schooled in the University of Port Harcourt for example, you would go to the registration desk for the South-South Zone, if you schooled in the University of Lagos, you would locate the registration desk for the South-West Zone, and so on. Corps members will then present the required documents for verification, including:

  • NYSC Call-up Letter (Original and photocopies)
  • Green Card
  • Addendum
  • Statement of Result or Degree Certificate
  • School Identity Card
  • NYSC Green Card (Printed from the NYSC portal)
  • Medical Fitness Certificate (Issued by a government-recognized hospital)
  • I.T Letter (for HND graduates)
  • Practicing License (for medical graduates only)

NYSC officials will cross-check these documents against their database. In some cases, biometric verification will be conducted to confirm identity.

7. Biometric Registration and Issuance of State Code

After document verification, corps members will proceed to biometric registration, which includes:

  • Capture Biometric Data: Your thumbprint and face ID will be verified to ensure that it matches the one used during the online registration on the NYSC portal.
  • The printout of your certificate format will be handed over to you and on that printout, your state code will be there.
  • Issuance of an NYSC State Code Number, which serves as a unique identifier throughout the service year. Corp Members in camp are being grouped into Platoons. We have Platoons 1 – 10. If your state code ends with a zero, you’re in platoon 10, if it ends with 2, it means platoon 2, and so on. An example of a state code for a PCM camping in Niger State is NG/24A/4023.
